With the excess tiles and daub, we built a barbecue which could use hot ashes and charcoal. The 2005 project barbecue had been used a great deal, so this one was a better-built structure. The stokers (particularly the night stokers) were able to cook a wide range of food using both the barbecue and the hot ash pits. This is a sensible use of waste heat, and could easily have been employed by glassworkers from the Roman period.
