Chariot Race Beaker, 1st century AD

The lower frieze depicts four quadrigae (four-horse chariots), all racing. The middle frieze shows the objects adorning the spina, the central barrier of the Circus Maximus in Rome. On the upper frieze are the names:

HIERAX ('The Falcon')
OLYMPAE (Olympus)
ANTILOCE (Autolycus)
CRESCES



This is a reproduction of the complete beaker from Colchester, now in the British Museum. A few smaller fragments of this beaker type are also known, including one found at Fishbourne, and another from Neuss, Germany. For more information on this beaker and the Circus Maximus see this article.
